FAQ

How will we be communicating throughout the zine process?
We will be communicating via Discord! This way all hosts, mods, artists and writers will be able to interact in one space together. That being said, it is required you already have a Discord made before applying for a position.
Will the zine be physical? How much will it cost?
We are anticipating our zine to be around $35-$40, but the price could change for any reason at any time.
I’m a minor. Can I still apply?
Yes! However, it’s important to know that this zine is planned to be printed physically. Since each artist will potentially receive a physical copy of the zine, the hosts/mods will eventually need to collect addresses to ship them out. Because of this, you will need a parent or guardian’s permission before applying for the zine. It’s also important to note that you and your parents/guardians need to be comfortable with you working/interacting with people who are 18 years or older. The discord server will be a SFW space where everyone will be able to interact comfortably with each other.
Minors are also more than welcome to apply for a Moderator position as long as they meet certain qualifications, which are listed in the next question.
How many page/merch artists will you accept?
We are looking to accept 30-35 page artists and 5-6 merchandise artists. These numbers may change at any moment for any reason until the contributor applications roll out.
What qualifications are you looking for in a page artist?
For Page Artists, we are looking for experienced digital and traditional artists who have a strong grasp of anatomy, composition, backgrounds and color value. While it’s preferred that you’ve drawn Splatoon characters in the past, it’s not required! We will be accepting artists based on their styles represented in their application. If you’re a traditional artist, your art must be scanned to the highest quality possible in the application as well as the final product. If you are a 3D artist, only professional 3D rendering will be considered.
How many writers will you accept?
We are hoping to accept 5-7 writers for the zine. This number may change at any moment for any reason until the contributor applications roll out.
What qualifications are you looking for in a writer?
For writers, we are looking for people who have written stories about Splatoon in the past, understand the characters, and know the world they live in. It’s also important that applicants have a basic grasp on English grammar and spelling. Portfolios for applications will have a limit of 7k words.
What content am I allowed to write about?
We're looking for writers who understand how to write Agent 3 as a character. Pieces for the zine will need to be heavily focused on Agent 3 in some way. You may have ship pieces in your portfolio, however any portfolios with NSFW featured in them will be discarded and you will not be allowed to participate in the zine.
What qualifications are you looking for in a merchandise artist?
For Merchandise Artists, we will be looking for an art style that's fitting for merchandise (strong silhouettes, clear shapes, etc). Examples of physical merch are preferred, but not required. If you have any, please include mockups of merch you've designed as well! Once again, it is not required to have drawn Splatoon characters in the past, but it is preferred. It's also important to note that according to our interest check, we had the most requests for acrylic charms, enamel pins, sticker sheets and postcards/mini prints. It would be preferred if applicants had at least one of these items in their portfolio.
What kind of content am I allowed to draw?
This zine will be SFW only. Absolutely NO NSFW, kinks, fetishes, etc. will be allowed, even in the application process. If you have NSFW in your portfolio, your application will be discarded and you will not be allowed to participate in the zine. We want to keep our zine clean and family-friendly, especially since there will be minors in the zine Discord server.
Page artists will be allowed to draw canon or an original version of Agent 3 representing any gender they choose. You can also include other characters Agent 3 may interact with, such as Marie, Agent 8, an original character, etc. As long as the piece remains focused on Agent 3, artists will be given creative liberties.
Can I draw characters from the Splatoon manga?
At this time, we are not allowing any of the manga characters to be drawn for the zine. We want to see YOUR take on Agent 3, not someone else’s!
What if new Splatoon 3 content is released about Agent 3? Can I include it in my zine piece?
With the September 2021 Nintendo Direct, it was revealed that Agent 3 is now the Captain of the New Squidbeak Splatoon with Callie and Marie at their side. We will allow artists to draw Captain Three as seen in the most recent Splatoon 3 trailer. Since we don’t know much about the plot quite yet, we are asking writers to hold off on writing about Captain Three.
What charity is the money going to be donated to?
The two most popular charity suggestions we had were Oceana and The Trevor Project. The charity we end up choosing will be announced at a later date.
I still have some questions and concerns! Where can I ask them?
For any questions or concerns left unanswered, please DM us on Twitter or use the ask box on our Tumblr.

• Mockups of merch you've designed are helpful!
• Once again, it is not required to have drawn Splatoon characters in the past, but it is preferred.

For Writers, we are looking for
• People who have written stories about Splatoon in the past, understand the characters, and know the world they live in.

Mods

Mod ZippyHead/Shipping Mod

Howdy! I’m Zippy! (she/her)
I’m very excited to be hosting a zine about one of my all time favorite characters, Agent 3! I’ve been a fan of them since the fist Splatoon game, as it was one of my biggest obsessions in college when it came out.
While hosting a zine is a new role for me, being in charge of a large group of people while meeting certain expectations and deadlines surely isn’t. I’m currently a manager at a local movie theatre and know how to take charge and get things done before the deadline.
I’ve also been a contributor in two previous zines, those including the Splatoon Meme Zine and the Friends For All Seasons Zine. I had a blast creating art for both those wonderful projects and thought it would be fun to create my own, with the help of some friends, of course!Since I’ve been drawing as long as I can remember, early last year I decided it was time I open up my own small shop. I’ve been using my shop experience to help prepare the merchandise portion of Hero Shot Zine since I’m familiar with how to create charms, stickers and many other items as well as shipping out multiple orders at once.

Mod AbbyCo-Head/Finance Mod

Hey there, I’m Abby! (she/her)
I’m a 3D character animation student in university and a certified Gamer Girl™. I’ve worked in painting studios and have been drawing lots of Splatoon in between work and school. Over the Summer, I participated in the Splatoon hairstyle zine: A Cut Above the Ink and over the Fall, I worked on storyboarding, color keying, character animation, and lighting in an animated short film that’s winning awards at film festivals now! I’ve also owned a small business for nearly 3 years and am no stranger to managing deadlines and large finances because of it!

Mod AddisonWriting Mod

Hello hello, name's Addison Noxy! (all pronouns fine)
I'm as mysterious as the night and also nocturnal as the night, but I promise I'm friendly!
I'm a bit of a social media recluse, but if you're in the Splatoon fandom you might know me as the person who wrote a 420,000 word fanfiction out of nowhere after getting hooked on the game. Writing is an old flame that I've somewhat neglected recently, but I'm still happy to roll out some ideas and help out with betas and critiques. Consider it a specialty! As for actual experience, I'm one of the writers for the NSBS Zine (coming soon) and have done plenty of editing and revising for anything from university papers to original novels, several of which I was paid for which technically makes me a professional. What else... I love foxes. Pleased to meet you!

Mod KomaCommunications/Social Media Mod

Hey, I'm Koma. (he/him)
I'm a self-proclaimed prince by day and a professional cute boy artist by night. I've been doing zines for about 3 years now, being involved in over 15! I've been an artist for a couple Splatoon ones, including Memory Line, Japanfest, and currently Inkcon! I was the Organization Mod for the Galar Zine, Art/Organization Mod for Memory Link: A Zine from Unova, Social Media/Discord Mod for Oh Boy, Monsters! A Monster Boy Zine, and am currently the Head Mod of [[BIG SHOT]]: A Spamton Zine! This is my first time modding a Splatoon zine, and I'm so excited to be a part of it!

Mod JingleCommunications/Social Media Mod

Hey hey! I'm Jingle. (she/her)
I'm a self-taught digital artist and I've been a fan of Splatoon since 2016! I've modded in the Splatune Gijinka zine and I'm used to communicating with a large number of artists and assisting them. I'll be managing check-ins and helping contributors. I've also participated in a few zines including Splattershot, Minion impact, and Cutfresh! This is my first physical zine, so I'm super excited to make this happen!

Mod ShadooCommunications Mod

Hiya! I'm Shadoo. (she/her)
I'm a sort of artist with an illustration degree and a huge love for everything cute. I've been part of zines for quite a few years as both a mod and an artist! My most notable moded zines would be Octo Canyon Zine, Rave in the Wave Zine and Re-fresh! As for ones I've participated in the list goes to at the very least 10. I'm very excited to be helping out in this zine as I've been interested in Splatoon ever since it was announced! Really excited to meet you all!

Mod KerryCommunications Mod

I'm Kerry! (she/they)
I'm a digital artist and 2D animation student. I've had a huge love for Splatoon ever since the release of Splatoon 2, and it's made a huge impact on my life! Joining zines is one of the ways I like to express that love. I've contributed page art to many zines over the years, including City of Color, Rave in the Wave and Test Passed! I'll mostly be helping with applications, communication and check-ins. This is my first time modding a zine, but I'm learning a lot from my fellow mods and awesome hosts!
